?Gut Renovation:
The historic carriage house underwent a complete gut renovation, preserving its distinctive facade while adapting the interiors for contemporary living.
Interior designer Mark Cunningham, known for his masterfully layered approach to timeless design, paired natural stone with a restrained palette to bring warmth and sophistication to the generous living spaces. Designed to be lived in, the interiors balance refinement with everyday comfort.
The same care extends beyond the finishes. The carriage house’s substantial original construction is complemented by durable materials and carefully selected mechanical systems, with close attention to acoustics, natural light, and everyday function. The renovation reflects a lasting investment in the home, thoughtfully renewed with generations to come in mind.
? History:
Augustus and Helen Juilliard, whose textile fortune and love of the performing arts would later fund the creation of the Juilliard School, commissioned renowned architect Alfred Zucker to build a stable with horses on 3 levels and an apartment above.
Alfred Zucker was one of the leading architects of the Gilded Age, best known for designing The Hotel Majestic for Jacob Rothschild and the Plaza Hotel in Argentina.
As one of New York’s most prominent families, they spared no expense on construction and design, choosing the best architect and materials of the time.
Over the decades, the carriage house continued to evolve, serving as a bottling plant and later a repackaging factory. In 1970, it became a Hollywood memorabilia warehouse, housing film props and costumes worn by stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland and Greta Garbo.
?Downing Street:
The south-facing residence sits on a quiet, discreet West Village block, with Sir Winston Churchill Square at the corner.
